Wireline Core Drilling: Efficient Coring for Mineral Exploration and Deep Drilling

Wireline core drilling is an advanced coring method designed to retrieve rock samples without pulling the entire drill string out of the borehole. In conventional coring, the entire rod string often needs to be removed whenever a sample is collected, which becomes extremely inefficient in deep exploration holes. Wireline systems, by contrast, allow the inner tube and core sample to be recovered through the drill string using a wireline tool, while the outer rods remain in place.

As drilling progresses deeper, additional drill rods are connected at the top to extend the string as needed. The core sample is held inside an inner barrel that is locked and aligned with the drill head during coring. When the sample is ready for retrieval, the top of the drill string is opened, and an overshot assembly is lowered through the rods at the end of a wireline cable. It travels down the borehole, latches onto the top of the inner tube, and then pulls the sample barrel upward through the outer drill string. Once the inner tube reaches the surface, the core sample can be extracted, inspected, and logged before the barrel is lowered back down and reconnected to the cutting assembly.

This approach is especially valuable in boreholes deeper than about 30 meters, where repeatedly removing and reinserting the entire rod string would consume significant time and labor. In mining and mineral exploration, holes may extend to 500 meters, 1,000 meters or more, making fast sample recovery critical to project efficiency. By reducing round-trip rod handling, wireline core drilling saves substantial operational time, lowers drilling costs, and improves overall productivity. It also helps minimize borehole stability risks caused by frequent pipe withdrawal, making it suitable for a wide range of ground conditions and deep coring applications. A choice of standard diameters is available to match different exploration requirements.
